Prepared-route guidance for iPhone and Apple Watch
Keep the route
close at hand.
HikeRoute is being designed to follow a route prepared on your iPhone, give calm guidance on your wrist, and retain a simpler recovery view on Apple Watch when phone guidance is unavailable.
The idea
Your phone does the thinking.
Your watch keeps you moving.
Most of the time, the iPhone handles route matching and navigation calculations while it stays in your pocket. Apple Watch presents only what matters now: route status, direction and distance.
Before setting out, a reduced route package is prepared for the Watch. The aim is graceful degradation—not a claim that an app can replace a map, compass or appropriate outdoor safety equipment.
One route, two devices
Prepare. Follow. Recover.
A deliberately simple operating model, designed to make the current source and quality of guidance clear.
- 01
Prepare on iPhone
Import a GPX route, check its shape and create a compact route package before leaving.
- 02
Follow from your wrist
See the direction ahead, distance to the next meaningful point and whether you remain within the route corridor.
- 03
Degrade honestly
If phone guidance becomes unavailable, the Watch is intended to identify the change and offer simpler locally held guidance.
Clear about what it knows
Guidance should never look more certain than it is.
HikeRoute is being designed around explicit operating states. Fresh phone-led guidance should look different from a delayed connection, Watch-only recovery or uncertain location.
Early development
Built carefully, tested outside.
The first work is focused on route preparation, device-to-device transfer and real physical-device testing. Battery behaviour, background execution and recovery transitions will be measured before they become product promises.
